Class 11th |Botany Viva-voce Questions And answers Chapter 2 identification of plants
Q.1. Define symbiosis.
Ans.It is defined an association of two organisms that one mutually benefitted. Example in lichen.
Q.2. What are bacteria?
Ans. Bacteria are unicellular prokaryotic organisms that reproduce by binary fission.
Q.3. What is the study of algae called ?
Ans. Phycology.
Q.4. What is the study of fungi called ?
Ans. Mycology.
Q.5. What are thallophytes ?
Ans. Thallophytes include algae and fungi.
Q.6. What are algae ?
Ans. These are green plants included under thallophyta and they are autotrophic. Vascular tissue
are lacking in algae.
Q.7. What type of organism is a bacteria ?
Ans. Bacteria are the unicellular prokaryotic organisms.
Q8. Under which branch of seience do you study bacteria ?
Ans. Bacteriology.
Q.9. Who is Father of Bacteriology ?
Ans. Anoton van Leeuwenhoek is known as the Father of Bacteriology.
Q. 10. What are thallophytes ?
Ans. Thallophytes are the plants which have plant body thallus like, i.e., not differentiated into root, stem and leaves.
Q. 11. What are algae ?
Ans. Algae are aquatic, autotrophic thallophytes.
Q. 12. Under which branch of science do you study algae ?
Ans. Phycology.
Q. 13. What are fungi ?
Ans. Fungi are non-green, heterotrophic thallophytes.
Q. 14. Under which branch of science do you study fungi?
Ans. Mycology
Q. 15. Why Spirogyra is known as pond silk ?
Ans. Spirogyra is known as pond silk because it forms slimy masses floating freely in the standing waters.
Q. 16. What ius a coenocytic hypha ?
Ans. A multinucleate, unseptate hypha is called a coenocytic hypha.
Q. 17. Give an example in which coenocytic hyphae are found ?
Ans. Rhizopus.
Q. 18. What is the dominant phase in Funaria ?
Ans. Gametophyte
Q. 19. What are ferns ?
Ans. Ferns are pteridophytes with body differentiated into roots, underground stem called rhizome and compound leaves.
Q.20. What is a frond ?
Ans. Compound leaves of ferns is called frond.
Q. 21. Why are pine leaves called needles ?
Ans. Pine leaves are called needles because they are long, narrow and needle shaped.
Q. 22. Name the types of shoots in Pinus ?
Ans. Long shoots and dwarf shoots.
Q.23. What is a sporophyll ?
Ans. A leaf bearing sporangia is called sporophyll.
Q.24. What is 'sulphur shower' ?
Ans. The discharge of yellow polen grains of pinus in large numbers is called 'sulphur shower'
Q.25. What is the mode of nutrition of a lichen ?
Ans. Symbiotic.
Q.26. Why are lichens called indicators of pollution ?
Ans. Lichens are very sensitive to pollution in the air. They do not grow in polluted areas.
Q.27. Can a fungus grow on a hard and stony surface?
Ans. No, as it cannot derive nutrition from hard surface, since it is a sporophyte.
Q.28. What are gymnosperms?
Ans. The plants which have naked seeds i.e., the seeds are not enclosed within the fruits
Q.29. What are angiosperms ?
Ans. Angiosperms are the flower bearing plants.
Q.30. Which group of plants is termed as 'amphibious plants' ?
Ans. Bryophytes.
Q.31. Why bryophytes are called amphibious plants ?
Ans. Because they grow in damp and moist land but require water for sexual reproduction.
Q32. What are non-flowering plants called ?
Ans.Cryptogams
Q.33. To which kingdom does bacteria belong? Give reasons.
Ans. Kingdom Monera, as bacteria is a unicellular prokaryote which lacks true nucleus and membrane.
bound organelles
Q34. Algae belongs to division Thallophyta and Funaria to Bryophyta. Give one feature which distinguishes them.
Ans. The body of Thallophytes is not diferentiated into root, stem and leaves as seen in algae, where as
Bryophytes like funaria have root, stem and leaf like structures.
9.35. Mateh the column A with B:
Column A ColumnB
1. Basidiospores (a) Yeast
2. Ascospores (b)Oscillatoria
3. Zygospores (c)Mushroom
4.Conjugation (d)Spirogyra
5.Hormogones (e)Rhizopus
Ans. 1-(c) , 2-(a), 3-(e), 4-(d), 5-(6)
.
Q36. Spirogyra has typical chloroplast and cytoplasm. What is special about them ?
Ans. Chloroplast in spirogyra is ribbon shaped and cytoplasm is in strand form holding the nucleus.
Q37. Why a separate Kingdom has been given to Fungi ?
Ans. The fungus is heterotrophic (saprophytic) in nature so cannot be put under plants. Also it has
cell wall so can not be put along with animals, hence it has been given a separate Kingdom.
Fungi
Q38. What is the diiference between sporangiophore and sporangium?
Ans. Sporangiophore is the stallk which bears sporangium where as sporangium is the sac which
contains spores.
